I most probably totally don't deserve this, but here I am, among the coolest artists, fundraising for Ukraine as part of the Sunflowers for Ukraine auction on MakersPlace. 100% of my sales will go to Ukraine.
Hardly anyone can imagine how much this means to me, on a personal level. For years I've struggled with guilt, fantasizing about breaking all ties with Russia and loving the Russia that exists somewhere parallel to Stalin's/Putin's Russia. It hurts so much. I want Ukraine to be free. I want Ukrainian children to be free.
What Ukrainian refugee children need is a warm, safe space where they can get the time each of them needs to heal and regain some sense of control over their lives, together with their mothers and siblings.
On February 26, 2022, I projected my then unfinished antiwar animation A Parallel World on the walls of the Hermitage in Amsterdam, the first and only foreign dependence of the famous Hermitage Museum in St.Petersburg, Russia (they broke their ties with the Russian Hermitage shortly afterwards). I stand with Ukraine and all the brave Russians who rise against Putin's military invasion of Ukraine. I am Russian and I speak Russian to my children, but Putin is not my president. The Kremlin is not only robbing Ukrainians and Russians of their lives. The Kremlin is robbing all Russian people of a future.
